Socks in different compression classes

Compression socks are available in four different classes based on the level of decreasing compression they offer. The most common class is 1, which is also what most of the socks in our range have. Higher classes are often used in more extreme cases or for medical use.

  • Class 1 (15 - 21 mmHg): Used for minor problems such as swelling in the legs, feet or toes, tired feet or minor varicose veins.
  • Class 2 (22–32 mmHg): Used after surgery or for more serious varicose veins. Should only be used after consulting a doctor.
  • Class 3 (33–46 mmHg): Used only for acute problems and ordered by medical staff based on individual measurements to ensure the correct size and fit.
  • Class 4 (46 mmHg and above): Used only in hospitals and nursing homes.

How does compression class work?

The compression in the stocking is measured in mmHg (mm = millimetres, Hg = mercury). This measurement determines how strong the compression is in the stocking. The higher the mmHg, the greater the compression force.

Why compression socks?

Compression socks are used to support venous return in the legs and reduce swelling, heaviness and discomfort. By applying decreasing pressure from the ankle up towards the thigh, the stocking helps the blood to circulate effectively, which can prevent problems or facilitate the treatment of existing conditions. For best results, it is important to choose the right size, as the size affects how accurately the pressure is distributed. A high-quality stocking feels comfortable and retains its shape even after prolonged use, making the compression stocking an effective and reliable aid for healthy and tired legs.

Can I sleep with compression socks on?

No, it is not recommended to sleep with the socks on. When lying down, blood pressure decreases and the purpose of increased blood circulation therefore becomes redundant. If you also have medical compression socks with a high compression class, these can cause numbness and discomfort when you sleep.

What is the difference between support socks and compression socks?

Compression socks and support socks have similar functions, but the difference lies in the pressure distribution. Compression socks have varying pressure with the highest pressure at the ankle, which decreases upwards, providing better support for exercise and faster muscle recovery. Support socks, on the other hand, have a hard and even pressure that can be too strong during physical activity, which can lead to cramps.
